Why Eating At Your Desk Is Bad For Your Health

Having lunch at your desk and working through your break might not seem like that big a deal, however you’d be surprised to learn that not only does it not increase productivity but over time it can also contribute to health problems.

It’s estimated that between half to two-thirds of workers eat during their shifts. That may sound like a lot of hard-working people putting their work before their themselves but there’s actually several reasons why those hard-working people need to have a break just like everyone else.

YOU DON’T GET A BREAK FROM YOUR WORK

It’s very important to be able to drop what you’re doing for a short time and take your mind off the task at hand. Even if it’s just for your sanity and to unburden your mind. Studies have shown that as little as 20 mins away from your work is enough to have a positive effect.

IT’S VERY EASY TO OVEREAT

Staying at your desk for too long is a lot like sitting on the sofa at home watching tv; you’re just going to be fixed on what’s in front of you, so you won’t really be thinking too much about how much food you’re putting into your body.

PRODUCTIVITY IS INCREASED AFTER A BREAK

After a short break you’ll come back feeling refreshed and energised, ready to give 100% again until the end of the work day. It’s important to stop what you’re doing and have a change of environment whilst your mind relaxes after which you can return and perform more effectively.

BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Over time it can start to affect your health. No breaks can lead to elevated stress levels which after a while will start to negatively impact your health and can be taxing on your body. Make time each day for a complete change of scenery and return feeling ready to work again.

Each day look to have at least 20-30 minutes away from your work environment, possibly taking the chance to have lunch outside with colleagues. Your work will still be there when you return and not only will it be easier to do but you’ll feel 10 times better knowing that.
