Probiotics come in many different forms but fundamentally they are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, in particular our digestive system. When we think of the word 'bacteria' it's usually associated with something dirty that causes diseases, but the truth is that bacteria comes in both good and bad forms and are influential to our lives and all life on the planet than we can ever realise.
The two most important benefits of taking a probiotic includes boosting the immune system and improving digestive function, which includes gut health. Regular use of a probiotic can also assist in treating IBS, constipation, diarrhoea, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and many other digestive issues.
Six in ten UK households regularly buy probiotic drinks and supplements, which claim to be bursting with health-boosting ‘friendly bacteria’. Recent studies have shown that in a number of them, the ‘friendly bacteria' said to aid digestion barely even made it to the ‘target’ area, the small intestine.
To be effective, probiotics are considered to have 3 key features; contain a high live bacteria count, they need to survive passing through the acidic stomach environment and finally they need to flourish in the small intestine. If all of these features are achieved then the probiotic will get to work and do it what it does best.
Studies show that most well-known brands of probiotic drinks and yoghurt contained enough bacteria but failed on the next two stages, while others fell short on the number of bacteria surviving the stomach. A few passed all three challenges. Bacteria survived the stomach and flourished in the small intestine, however it contained fewer live bacteria than stated.
The big question, do we need to take one? Well some people take them as a form of health insurance and some take them for chronic disorders such as IBS and are often not particularly satisfied with conventional medicine. Taking probiotic supplements for preventative reasons are a lot safer than taking drugs like statins and they're a popular choice as long as they meet all of the requirements necessary to reach the lower intestine and work effectively.
A great alternative is fermented foods. Fermented foods have been part of the human diet for centuries and they give us a far greater variety and complexity of beneficial bacteria than most probiotic supplements. While no-one can deny the benefits of probiotic supplementation, in the long term it is easier to trust the thousands of years of fermented foods in the human diet more than most laboratory formulations. Some well-known home-made fermented food options include probiotic yoghurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi and pickles.
