The CEO of one of the world’s biggest companies (Pepsico) recently said that in the very near future, bug protein will be a real source of protein for many people in the Western world. She stated that the high protein content of bugs such as crickets and worms alongside their low cost will eventually influence consumer choice.
Is this as crazy as it sounds or are we actually going to be eating bugs? Consider that 80% of the world’s population ALREADY eats bug protein! Already in the West people are eating foods with bug protein such as cricket cakes! Bugs also have health benefits in that they are lower in calories than animal proteins. Crickets, termites and silkworms are all high in protein and low in calories.
One of the world’s top chefs who has introduced bug protein into his foods warns that they need to be delicious for people to eat them. Even with high protein, he warns, people will not eat bugs unless they taste good.
In many countries such as Thailand you routinely see cooked bugs on street corners. For them, there is nothing unusual about bug protein. Will you join this future and eat bugs? The good news is, LA Muscle is not working on a bug protein formula quite yet but never say never.
