Christmas is a time to unwind and relax with family and friends as you forget about your regular schedule and diet and indulge yourself in delights that you may not usually have throughout the year. The Christmas holidays can be a minefield when it comes to over indulgence, accidental or otherwise, so here a few tips to help you get through the holidays without over-doing it.
1. WATCH YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE
It may be a time when you don’t want to restrict yourself, but alcohol is one of the main causes of excessive weight gain and health issues over the winter break. People who drink alcohol regularly will likely be drinking on a near daily basis throughout the holidays, so it would be wise to try and limit yourself to a few units and even opt for low-calorie or low-alcohol alternatives.
2. DON’T SIT DOWN ALL DAY
It might be tempting to sit in front of the TV all day or at the table eating but try and be active during the day as well. No-one is saying you need to work out as there are so many little things like a family walk after a meal or playing something with the kids is enough to break up the day and keep your body active.
3. GO LOW CALORIE WHERE POSSIBLE
There are tons of calories hidden in EVERYTHING and Christmas dinner alone can contain up to 3,000 calories. With that in mind, whether it’s food or drink, look at the labels when selecting your products and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how many calories you can save yourself without sacrificing taste or quality.
4. AVOID STRESS
The holiday times are rife with potential stressors and are a time that cause many people a lot of stress and anxiety. Stress can contribute to weight gain as well as other physical and mental issues. Be mindful of your stressors and avoid them where possible, whether its situations of conflict or little things that annoy you. Avoiding them will help you relax more and will also reduce the impact it has your body as well as your mind.
5. TAKE PRE-CAUTIONS TO AVOID ILLNESS
Excess food and drink can cause illness, but you should also think about simple illnesses such as cold and flu. Always stay warm, keep things clean, take extra vitamins and minerals and consume extra fruit and vegetables and you should see it through to New Year without going back to work sick.
