Oats are an extremely important as not only are they highly nutritious, they are one of the healthiest grains around. They are a whole-grain food, known as Avena Sativa and are packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Humans have been eating oats regularly since around 420 BC and are thought to have first been commonly consumed in the British Isles. Their ability to withstand and grow in temperate climates made them an essential grain for food consumption by both humans and animals.
They are extremely nutrient-rich and their nutrient composition is well-balanced. They are also low in calories so work well as part of any diet. Oats also have a range of benefits and can help improve skin care as well as help decrease the risk of asthma in children when eaten regularly as part of a healthy balanced diet.
Here are a few facts about oats:
- Wild oats are best, followed by whole rolled oats. The more processed the oats the less nutrient-rich they will be as the processing removes most of the nutrients. They should also not be washed as that will also remove nutrients.
- Oats contain two unique steroidal saponins; avenacoside A1, and avenacoside B2 that can aid lean muscle growth.
- Benefits of eating oats include aiding weight loss, the lowering of cholesterol and blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of heart disease.
- They are a good source of carbs and fibre, containing a powerful soluble fibre called beta-glucan.
- Oats are naturally gluten-free and contain more protein and healthy fats than any other grain.
As part of a healthy, flexible breakfast you should consume oats regularly to reap the substantial benefits of this superfood. Whatever your training goals, oats will boost your energy levels and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
